Training Up the Youth of the Nation

    By: Sarah Giese

Youth; they are the ones that the future of our world may depend on the most, but they can’t handle it all alone and that’s exactly where the New Life youth group comes into play. Every Wednesday night at 6:30pm, teens from grades 7th through 12th meet with the dedicated youth leadership team of Jireh Hormann, John Heter, Nathan Hall, Samantha Amoros, Gina Wagonner, and Starla Sandoval to “hang out, study the Bible, and build stronger relationships with God and each other”, as John put it. This newly reformed youth group, now named Amplify, mixes fellowship and teaching to reach out to young people, along with fun Friday and weekend events to build up camaraderie. Currently their curriculum follows the same “Spiritual Floor Plan” series that has been laid out by Pastor Jeff, though they also address some of the current issues that teenagers face today.

Training youth can be a difficult ministry and Jireh said one his major difficulties was “building a reliable leadership team that would be able to be an example for the students and be an encouragement to each of the others leaders for support”. When asked what their greatest need was, they replied, “We need prayer! Pray for strength.  It can be difficult dealing with people.  In the youth ministry we deal with students on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis and their parents as the need arises.” Yet, despite the obstacles that it has had to face, Amplify has grown and strengthened, as the number of youth has doubled in 2006 and hopes to increase again in 2007. “The best part for me,” said John, “Is seeing students come to the realization that this is real and make the transition from Christianity being something that their parents do to having a personal relationship with God.  This age group is exciting for me.  I believe that it is during this time period that we make many decisions that shape the type of people we will become.  It is the time in our lives where we begin to think and make decisions for ourselves.  I feel blessed that God has allowed me to be a part of this process for our students.”

Anyone who may want to be a part of the youth ministry is advised to pray first, as this type of work is not for everyone. If after that, a person does want to play part in the youth they should speak with John or Jireh, as they are always looking for volunteers for events like youth convention and winter camp.
